My new life began that day in a small cafe on Greensprings and Hollywood. "Are you free," I asked. You shrugged, "I guess, I been wondering that myself". "I mean tonight," I smiled. You said, "How 'bout 'round nine? I was referring to nothing less."
We walked those cold nights on the town, warm neon rained down, signs of a blessing divine. Silent nights in the park, calm and bright were the stars, eternity began with a spark. An address and a ring, the promise of things only God above could break apart.
I'll be goddamned, Jesus doesn't love me. If he did, he wouldn't let you tear my world apart. I'd sworn to the skies above me, you were sent down here to love me. And you did for just a little while and left me with a broken heart.
Well, our little house filled with love just wasn't enough to still your wandering mind. My attentions, it seemed, just smothered your dreams, maybe I had chained them to mine. So I asked the Lord to give me the words that would give us a little more time.
Jesus answered your prayers, but he took no 'count of mine. All those nights spent on my knees were just a waste of time. I'd sworn to the skies above me, you were sent down here to love me, and you did for just a little while and left me with a broken heart.
Now I walk these long nights all alone, harsh neon rains cold on the streets that led you away. In the park where we met I'll place my last bet and I'll offer my final prayer. God grant me the faith to carry the weight of the cross that you gave me to bear.
I'll be goddamned, Jesus doesn't love me. If he did, he wouldn't let you tear my world apart. I'd sworn to the skies above me, you were sent down here to love me. And you did for just a little while and left me with a broken heart.
